The Canudos Farm and its impact on local communities

The construction of the Canudos Wind Farm 1 & 2 has contributed to the social development of the communities located in the municipalities of Canudos, Jeremoabo and Euclides da Cunha,

The construction of the Canudos Wind Farm 1 & 2 has contributed to the social development of the communities located in the municipalities of Canudos, Jeremoabo and Euclides da Cunha, in Bahia’s countryside, which recently were able to enroll projects in the First Spontaneous Request for Proposals of the Voltalia Group in Bahia. In all, 18 initiatives were selected, including actions focused on social, educational, environmental, cultural, and sports aspects.

The request for proposals is part of the company’s investment plan for the implementation of socio-environmental actions in the region, totaling R$ 14.5 million, and the programs submitted followed two budget lines: the first range from R$ 5 thousand to R$ 10 thousand; and the second, from R$ 10 thousand to R$ 40 thousand. There were ten projects in the first category and eight in the second.

The proposal is to make these actions for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations (UN), and they must meet at least one of the following requirements: sponsorship of events typical of the local culture, musical activities, support for literacy activities for the youth and adults, small renovations or provision of equipment for associations and/or spaces for community coexistence, sponsorship of environmental education actions, among others.

Communities in the region even more integrated to the Canudos Wind Farm

To support local communities in the application process for the request for proposals, Voltalia held, between July and September 2021, training workshops and several meetings with local communities to reinforce the guidelines of the initiative and clarify any doubts. The meetings, in-person and online, are part of the Plan for the Support and Incentive to Production Activities of the Communities in the Area of Direct Influence, and they were aimed at instructing residents in developing the actions that participated in the assessment process of the request for proposals.

The great differential of this RfP, according to Robert Klein, CEO of Voltalia do Brasil, is listening to the communities and their demands. The company received several projects involving quilombola communities, promotion of local culture, support to family farming in the traditional communities of Fundo e Fecho de Pasto, and structural improvements in the headquarters of the associations in the regions. The RfP allowed the communities to be even more integrated to the Canudos Wind Farm 1 & 2, broadening the possibility of further improvements in the region of Canudos and surrounding areas. This is Voltalia’s mission, to improve the global environment and promote local development through the ethical and responsible engagement of each employee.
